Menuetti on vanhimpia tunnettuja tansseja Suomessa. |

The subject of this dissertation is the ethnic minuet in Finland. The minuet is one of the oldest couple dances in Finland, and it is still danced as a living tradition in some areas of the Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia.
The research has been carried out through historical documents and interviews. Combining these sources reconstructions have been made, and with the aid of these a picture of the dance reality of different eras has been created. It has been essential to see both dance and society as corporeal phenomena. The author has also considered his own dancing very important, because that is the way he has been able to experience the corporeality of the minuet.
The research shows the complexity of the minuet. The dance has often been regarded as dignified and ceremonial, and as such, strong symbolism has been attached to it. However, it has also been a dance with its tacit dimension: it has been danced as a wild and cheerful dance in which the joy of dancing has been the most important aspect. The ethnic minuet in Finland has had both these elements: symbolism and wordlessness. It has been an essential part of social reality with a contructive role in society.
This research is the first doctoral dissertation about Finnish ethnic dancing. One of its aims is to encourage the research of social dancing, and furthermore it tries to give an alternative to the traditional Western science by emphasizing the corporeality of the researcher himself in research. |
